Options for Dental Assisting Education in the State of Iowa

You have three options available to you to become a Registered Dental Assistant in Iowa today:

1.                  On the Job Training:  You can work for a dentist in trainee status for up to one year, at which time you can take the registration exams in radiography, infection control, hazardous waste and jurisprudence.

Disadvantages: Many Dentists simply aren’t hiring personnel unless they have some form of training.

2.          Community College Route:  These are one year, full-time programs.  Upon completion of the schooling, you must pass registration exams in radiography, infection control, hazardous waste and jurisprudence.  You are automatically registered upon passing these examinations.

Disadvantages:

1.  Must go to school full time, making it difficult to  work.

2.  These programs are expensive.  $6,000 - $10,000 tuition, plus book fees.

3.  These full-time programs often do not include CPR and Mandatory Reporting.

4.  Most of the learning occurs in a classroom setting.

3,         Mentoring Dentist Weekend Dental Assistant School:  This is the newest avenue to obtaining training in the field of Dental Assisting.  The Mentoring Dentist Dental Assisting School is registered by the Secretary of State as an Instructional School in the State of Iowa.  This is the first program of its kind ever offered in Iowa, consisting of 8 consecutive Saturday courses of 8 hours.  Total hours of instruction are 64 hours.  The course is taught in a modern dental clinic and will focus on what you really need to know to be an effective Dental Assistant.

The program has been designed to be all inclusive.  It prepares you to take the registration examinations in radiography, infection control, hazardous waste and jurisprudence.  Upon graduation, your name will be submitted to the Iowa Board of Dental Examiners.  Registration will be granted upon successful passing of the registration exams and  6 months of trainee status in a dental office.  We will  help you prepare for the exams!

Disadvantages:  There is no real disadvantage to our program. There is a demand for assistants from this program.  Response and support from Iowa Dentists has been phenomenal.

Advantages:

  • Lower Cost
  • Less Time
  • Course held in actual dental office
  • Can still work while you go to school

The Mentoring Dentist, LLC will be offering two Dental Assistant courses per year.  In addition, we will be offering Expanded Function Dental Assisting courses and a multitude of continuing education courses throughout our state.  Our Course Director, Linda Aschtgen, CDA, RDA has experience at the Community College Level having taught clinical dental assisting.  We are excited to have her on board.
