Registered Dental Assistant Requirements

All Iowa Registered Dental Assistants must renew their registration every two years. Renewal requires the completion of 20 hours of continuing education every two years, and must include:

• 2 credit hours in the subject area of infection control
• Evidence of current certification in CPR

  3 credit hours may be claimed in each 2 year period

• 2 credit hours in the subject area of Dental Radiography. (required only if certified to take xrays.)
• 2 credit hours in Mandatory Reporting for Adult/Child Abuse every 5 years

DANB Renewal Requirements

Renewal requires 12 hours of continuing education.  4 hours annually may be claimed for CPR training. (hours credit for hour attended)

How to obtain DANB certification?

To be eligible you must be a graduate from an ADA accredited program in dental assisting for DANB certification 

OR

Have a minimum 2 years work experience as a dental assistant verified by dentist-employer (minimum 3500 hours accumulated over 24 month period)
